Isn't it getting chilly - there's certainly an Autumnal feel to things now to which the sudden wealth of English Apples in the shops bears witness.  Waters and Paige have been bringing us Worcesters and Discovery and we're looking forward to Organic Russets and Coxes from them in the next few weeks.  We have had eight varieties of UK apples in the Non organic veg shop too. Apple Corner! id=

But first things first... My apologies for the lack or lateness of Veg Box News over the last couple of weeks.  I was on my hols - and when I'm on my hols Gemma usually posts, but Gemma was on her hols too – holidays really do get in the way sometimes!

Back to normal now (he said.)

Gemma has been putting the box menu together recently as Mark is away now and she was wondering whether Corn on the Cob two weeks running is too much, but we decided that it is such a short season that it’s best to capitalise on it while it’s there – so further suggestions for cooking corn on the cob please… Roasted on a late summer barbecue? Ottolenghi's fresh corn polenta?  (Some Friday customers will have missed corn this week as we ran out before all the boxes were made so you got a substitute.)

Next week’s boxes look like this

A and G

  • Potatoes 1kg Colleen - this is a late variety with waxy flesh and medium dry matter. Good for boiling, baking and chips as well.
  • Carrots 400g
  • Onions 500g
  • A Bag of Purple Sprouting Broccoli
  • A Pointy Cabbage (hispi or sweetheart)
  • 2 Corn CobsCorn on the Cob - a last taste of summer id=
  • 1 Bunch of Beetroot from Matt (Sheffield Organic Growers)

B will have a Harlequin Squash in place of potatoes

D will have a further 400g Potatoes and one of Matt’s Cucumbers

E will get both the Squash and the Cucumber (and a little something else to be decided!)

L and M will get the above additions and a bag of fine Sheffield Beans!

  • Bananas 600g
  • Apples (probably UK Worcesters) 700g
  • A Mango (Tues/Weds) or Melon (Thurs/Fri)
  • Pears 600g
  • A Grapefruit
  • 2 or 3 Lemons (depending on size) *

Q boxes will get a 500g bunch of grapes

* You may be thinking we have given you limes as these lemons are quite green. Don’t be fooled! These are lemons and are perfectly ripe. The normal yellow colour of lemons is not necessarily an indication of ripeness and fruit may be green although fully ripe. There are several factors that may affect the colour of citrus including temperature and sunlight and maturity of trees.
