All varieties are sold loose. It’s best to order in numbers of tubers rather than weight. Work out the length of your rows in feet and allow a tuber a foot for earlies and about 15 inches for maincrop. All are £1.70 kg, organic Scottish seed and certified disease free. Keep in open trays in a cool, light space so the tubers grow robust, healthy shoots. If you plant in April you will probably need to protect the foliage from frosts and cold ground can hamper growth. Waiting until warmer weather in May can be worthwhile, and early June plantings can still be successful if you’re running late! Water well two or three weeks before you plan to start harvesting.
EARLIES (for June and July)
• Colleen. Popular, disease resistant Irish variety with a fine waxy texture.
• Maris Bard. Good flavour and a waxy texture that is very resistant to disintegra-tion when boiled; one of our best sellers in the shop.
SECOND EARLY AND SALAD VARIETIES (for late July and August)
• Nicola. A tasty salad variety with long, yellow fleshed, waxy textured tubers.
• Charlotte. Our best selling potato. Delicious waxy flesh. Can produce a heavy crop quite early, but needs careful earthing up or mulching as the tubers can grow close to the surface and develop green patches in the light.
MAINCROP (for late August onwards)
• Arran Victory. Our favourite Christmas variety. Tricky to boil but has a very tasty, white floury flesh for superb roasties and mash. Purple skins. Slow to mature but some resistance to tuber blight.
• Cara. Popular and attractive white variety with pink ‘eyes’ . Mild flavour but versatile in the kitchen but a particularly good baker.
• Desiree. Popular red. Firm textured yellow flesh. A great all rounder.
• Ambo. Very pretty modern disease resistant white with pink patterned skin. Bred from Desiree and Cara. Tasty, firm flesh.
• Setanta. Very tasty, round, slightly floury red. Not widely grown but one of the best roasters. Related to the excellent ‘Rooster’. Disease resistant.
• Sarpo Mira. (pronounced sharpo) Super disease resistant red from Hungary. Floury, so good for mashing, roasting and fluffy bakers but can be tricky to boil.
